Hey … at least y’al ( in the EU ) could get the stripped down ready for action G-Class … whereas the only damn thing that come to our shores [ legally ] is the most over optioned over bloated over luxuriated version Benz can make .
Which means … at least you’ve got a stash of used good ones … whereas all we’ve got is the bling … and a few grey market cars that no Benz dealer or repair shop will touch with a ten foo pole ( or a twenty foot Russian )
Which is to say .. quit yer damn whining …. regardless of the current direction of Benz ( Range/Land Rover – Toyota etc ) at least you had em new when they were available .
So … one might ask … in light of the above revelations … how it it GS you’ve come to own a G Class ?
Ahhh grasshoppers … the answer is easy .. though the effort was .. epic .
First .. I’d of killed for a two door .. but alas … no 2drs came over ( legally ) .. so I settled for a 4dr . Bought the oldest one in good shape with reasonable miles I could find ( to get the least amount of excess electronic and luxury crap possible ) … and then proceeded to remove the majority of it … leather electronically adjustable heated seats .( replaced wit Recaro manual off road seats and built the rear seats )… leather door cards ( built new vinyl ones ) … way too much sound insulation …. the motors for the rear gate lift .. the excess infotainment ( more on that to come ) etc … etc .
Saving … over 1300 lbs of excess weight . Buuuuuuut .. gotta tell ya Sparky .. if ya thinks disassembling a modern day M/C is a pain in the ass … todays cars are ten times worse . Take the seats out ? Uh oh … their electronics are connected to ten other functions … change the wheels and tires .. best beware of the gearing … and on and on
The good thing though … because I removed and disconnected it all carefully .. everything was resellable … paying for the upgrades and replacements … plus a bit extra for ( ahhh … here comes the infotainment question ) a mighty fine custom stereo ( my moniker is the hint ) with an AM/FM – CD .. AND … a cassette player . No damn streaming etc for me … and I loves cassettes … always has
So how did I know how to does all this one might legitimately ask … suffice it to say I had a ton of advice from a CDN off road specialist who walked me thru all the difficult stuff .. in return for my buying any parts he had available from him
So … win win .. a rarity these days .. but there ya has it 😎
But ahhh … on the subject of this particular G-Class .
In all honesty pups … I’s not seeing so much as one’ solitary ‘bit of ‘ original ‘ or El Solitario design ( other than the logo on the grill ) anywhere on this !
In reality … its ALL been done before … 10,000 times or more .. making this at best … fun … but very very Been There- Done That- Got 10 million T Shirts derivative . Take no prisoners ? Hell … this is tame wimpiness in comparison to say …. a 1980’s rent a ride M-B Paris Dakar G-Class ( I aught to know … first hand )
